It’s Not About You

4am alarms, back to back as many times as needed. First one to the barn and last one to leave. Barely finding the time to eat a meal. Not being able to watch any of your fellow riders compete because there’s always more work to be done as soon as a horse leaves for the warm-up ring. Picking stalls, prepping horses, organizing the show schedule, cleaning tack, feeding and watering, braiding, cooling horses down, doctoring as needed, helping clients as needed.. the list doesn’t end.

Being a show groom is one of the best things that I’ve had the honor of doing. There is nothing quite as rewarding as being exhausted at the end of the day and looking down the aisle of horses you’ve helped care for, prep for competition, fed, and tucked away at night. Pair that with the ability to help their riders feel organized, comfortable, and prepared for their moment in the ring. The feeling never grows old.

It’s not glamorous, and I’d much rather be competing instead. Don’t get me wrong, my favorite part about horses is actually riding! Everything else is secondary to that. However, setting aside my own desires to serve those I care about, as well as their horses.. there’s something very special in it. Everybody relies on you, the trainers, the horses, the competitors, and even the family members of competitors. It instills humility, empathy, compassion, and selflessness. It’s a great teacher; I’ve learned things I didn’t know I needed to learn amidst the subtle moments throughout the day.

If you want to be a groom, it’s not about you. Not a single aspect of the job. You’ll lose sleep, plenty of meals, and at times will dread it. However, what you’ll gain is worth any and every sacrifice made. It’s taught me how to be a better horsewoman, employee, and teammate. Nothing teaches these things quite like getting in the trenches of the work required to build the character!

Whether you’re currently working as a groom or aspiring to learn, here I’ll be sharing all the valuable tips, lessons, and stories I’ve been apart of over the years. If there is anything in particular you’d like to be discussed, comment below or shoot me an email to chat!
